Beginners

When?

Sessions are 1:1 and last up to 1 hour depending on age.

Methodology

Using the power of storytelling and simple gameplay, we teach children how to move each piece in the below order. Once they have a grasp, we move on to basic tactics and strategy

No prior knowledge is needed for this course.

  1. Kings
  2. Pawns
  3. Bishops
  4. Knights
  5. Rooks
  6. Queens

This can take anywhere from 1 to 5 weeks depending on the age of the child, these sessions are 1:1 as each student learns at a different pace, and until this knowledge is in place, students are not able to play a full game with others.

Suitability

Children on this course should be interested in chess in some way. Maybe they have expressed an interest in board games, have watched chess youtubers or just keep asking their parents to play with them. Whatever it is, as long as they have an interest, they are welcome.

This course teaches children the basics of chess through storytelling and mini games. We aim to build completely foundational knowledge from nothing. However, this beginner’s course is not suitable for children with a strong grasp of chess already. If your child knows the names of the pieces and how they move, the 0-1300 course is more suited.
